Running Ability on Win XP with 'limited privileges'

Scenario - you have Windows XP Home/Professional and you want to create a user (e.g. for another member of the family) with limited privileges. You install Ability as Administrator but cannot get it to run properly when logged on as the user.

Problem 1 - Ability does not go beyond the splash screen on startup

Cause - Ability checks and updates the file type association for it's own files on startup and by default, a user with limited privileges does not have the correct privileges.

This behaviour has been change in build 3.0.029 of Ability Office - please download the latest update for a solution - the update is free for current users of 2002.

Problem 2 - Error message on writing a macro

Cause - Ability saves macro information (and user dictionaries) in it's own program folder. By default, the user does not have write privileges to this folder so an error message is displayed (although Ability runs normally otherwise).

Solution - change the permission level on the Ability program folder:

a) Login as Administrator
b) Select Start/Run
c) Enter the following command:
    CACLS   "C:\PROGRAM FILES\ABILITY OFFICE 2002"   /T   /E   /G   Username:F

Note that you should replace Username with the name of the limited privileges user you have created. If you are having difficulty with this command, copy and paste the text above, replace "Username" and then copy and paste into the Run dialog.
